Markup is not margin. At the same percentage, margin pricing is $992.97 higher than markup pricing. Formula: cost × (1 + markup) versus cost ÷ (1 − margin).

This is an arithmetic planning aid, not a contract interpretation. It does not automatically include taxes, retention, escalation, schedule delay, lost productivity or owner-specific rules.

Why equal percentages produce different prices

Markup is calculated from cost, while gross margin is calculated from the selling price. Confusing the two can quietly underprice approved extra work. This tool keeps both results visible so the commercial decision is explicit.

Contract terms still control

An entered cap is not legal or contractual advice. Confirm allowed overhead, profit, subcontractor tiers, bonds, insurance, taxes, retention, notice timing and approval requirements against the executed agreement.

Change order pricing FAQs

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup divides profit by cost. Margin divides profit by selling price. A 20% markup on 100 produces a 120 price and a 16.67% margin; a 20% target margin requires a 125 price.

What costs belong in a change order?

Typical inputs can include burdened labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, mobilization and other direct costs. Contract rules determine what is recoverable.

Does this calculator determine the allowed markup?

No. The optional cap is only a comparison against the percentage you enter. Use the signed contract and approved change-order procedure as the authority.
